Complementary healthcare encompasses a wide range of practices including reflexology, aromatherapy and therapeutic massage. This innovative foundation degree aims to produce informed and skilled complementary healthcare practitioners. The practical skills that you develop will be supported by a comprehensive theoretical knowledge of each therapy. The programme runs over two days a week and over 2 years.
It includes practice of your techniques in a professional setting at the Evolve Salons. The programme will focus on three main therapies body massage, reflexology and aromatherapy. You will also study a variety of subjects to support your work as a complementary therapist including nutrition, business, and professional practice. In the second year there is a work placement opportunity in a setting of your choice.

This is a unique programme of study offered by East Sussex College in partnership with the University of Brighton. The course aims to produce informed and skilled practitioners with the knowledge and skills to enter the complementary healthcare arena with confidence. The programme has been carefully designed to cover many different aspects of complementary healthcare. Practical skills are balanced with comprehensive training in the underpinning knowledge relating to the therapy being studied.

Year 2 Philosophies of Oriental Medicine; Remedial, Therapeutic & Sports Massage; Aromatherapy research; Process and Prevention of Disease; Professional Practice & Work Placement; Business
There will the opportunity to develop your skills in a real work environment in our professional Evolve Salons. You may also chose to complete the First-Aid at Work qualification.
You will need to have a minimum of a Level 3 Qualification (including NVQs) to 50 UCAS points or more plus GCSE English a 4(C) or above.
You will be expected to develop a portfolio of reflective practice over the two years of the course. Subjects are assessed through a variety of methods both practical and written. These include skills assessments, case studies, poster presentations and essay writing.
A Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Complementary Healthcare awarded by the University of Brighton.
The course will equip you with a range of experiences, qualifications and practical skills sought by employers or required for successful self-employment. Graduates may have the option to progress their training by undertaking an additional one year on our full time BSc Integrated Healthcare Management (Top-up), at our Hastings campus. Alternatively graduates may complete a full honours degree in other subjects such as physiotherapy or occupational health.
You will be required to wear appropriate loose clothing and closed-topped shoes for all practical sessions. Information will be given at interview regarding reading lists. Students are encouraged to become members of the Federation of Holistic Therapies to gain professional indemnity.
You will be working with members of the public and you may be required to provide models for your practical work. You may also need to get a DBS check for work placements.
Students must have the time, energy and commitment to cope with the demands of this programme. Mature applicants are welcomed.
This foundation degree course is eligible for an HE student loan.
