What will I study?

The two-year UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production is equivalent to three full A-Levels. It is designed to prepare you for employment in the music industry, self-employment or for progression to higher education. Year 1 comprises the Diploma, and most students progress to the Extended Diploma in year 2. Undertake a wide and exciting range of practical project work to develop your skills in our industry-standard facilities to prepare you a rewarding career in the industry.

Examples of work include recording a multi-track album, performance techniques and session musician skills, working as a self-employed entity in the industry and being commissioned to compose music to specific briefs. You will produce your own solo album, help organise and run at least one of a series of performances and also set up and run the college record label during the second year.

We have excellent facilities to help you develop technically, creatively and professionally.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Minimum five grade 4-9/C-A* at GCSE, or completed the Level 2 qualification.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by way of assignments which are both practical and research based, using industry-standard techniques and practices including audio recordings, live music performances, video interviews, tutorials, and blogs.

What qualification will I achieve?

UAL Diploma in Music Performance and Production, which is equivalent to 1.5 A levels. You will, after the second year, achieve a UAL Extended Diploma in Music Performance and Production, which is equivalent to 3 A Levels.

What can I do after completing this course?

This course can provide a pathway to both higher education and careers in the music industry and beyond, including with the BBC. Opportunities for higher level study in music technology and production include our own Foundation Degree and Degree in Music Production, awarded by the University of Brighton.

Are there any extra costs?

We recommend students purchase a pair of headphones to use on the course to enable students to familiarise themselves with their headphone sound which is hugely important for industry and production techniques. We also ask that students bring musical instruments to classes as often as possible excluding large/heavy instruments!

Additional Info

The department also runs a successful Foundation Degree in Music Production and Creative Recording and a BA (Hons) in Music Production and Creative Recording. You will be expected to complete assignments in your own time. There is regular open access to studios throughout the year, where either assignments or small project work can be completed.
