Inclusive Learning

Inclusive Learning has been designed to support and challenge young people aged 16 – 24 with SEND. Our ethos is to put our students first in everything that we do to ensure that they reach their personal goals and learning outcomes. All young people in our local communities have the right to a good quality of life and to join a college course which will give them the skills, knowledge, behaviours, and support to successfully progress into a more independent adulthood. The Inclusive Learning team will work closely with each young person and their family to plan an individual pathway and set aspirational goals for achievement, which will be celebrated throughout the year. Most young people on an Inclusive Learning course will have an Education Health and Care Plan and some of them will require support and therapy which is written into their EHCP. Our specialist team of curriculum, therapy and support staff will celebrate and build on the strengths of every young person whilst ensuring that all support aims to increase independence and confidence. Our courses are intended to prepare young people for adulthood and start them on a pathway to life, independence, and the world of work. Inclusive Learning has dedicated facilities to provide the best possible environment to support a student’s learning and includes a therapy area, personal care room and sensory space. Maths, English and Digital Skills Students will be supported and challenged to improve their Maths and English skills as part of their programme and will be able to take a GCSE or Functional Skills qualification if it is appropriate and right for them. Our students will also be able to improve their digital skills by exploring the technology and social media which will support them in their adult life. Supported Learning - Preparation for Adulthood Supported Learning - preparation for adulthood challenges young people with a range of inclusion needs such as learning difficulties, disabilities, and Autism Spectrum. Students are supported by a dedicated team of specialist staff in their own learning environment which has the additional benefit of being based on and having full access to a college campus. Each student will be supported to make decisions and develop skills for adult life such as going shopping for food, using public transport, and managing money. Each student will aim to achieve a qualification and will have opportunities to take part in enterprise events, a work placement and or voluntary work in the local community. Through the combination of practical activities and classroom learning our students will develop their communication and teamwork as well the skills, knowledge, and behaviour which they will need for the increased independence and accessing community health and world of work. At the right time, young people will be supported to think about their future and choices after college.

Eastbourne, Lewes, and Hastings Steps Steps supports and challenges young people who are not yet ready to access a full-time vocational study programme at college due to a diverse range of learning, social, emotional and inclusion needs.

Students will have the opportunity to experience learning, achieving qualifications in different vocational subjects within a nurturing learning environment as well as community projects and building employability skills alongside developing their personal and social skills.
Some students will have an education, health, and care plan, requiring wraparound support in small group teaching to successfully prepare for progression into Step Up, a full-time course, an Apprenticeship, Supported Internship or Project Search.

Step-Up Step Up provides a natural progression route from Steps enabling students to further develop their employability skills, work experience through Enterprise projects and social and personal development achieving a higher level qualification. This will continue to be a nurturing learning environment for students who may have an Educational Health and Care plan and or a range of disabilities or social needs. Small learning groups which promote further independence through ownership and encouragement to broaden aspirations to progress into the world of work or a chosen full time curriculum course.
