Beauty Therapy students from colleges around the UK competed this past Wednesday 13 June in the regional heats of the World Skills competition. Representatives from seven different colleges came to Lewes to take part in the nerve wracking test, hosted by Sussex Downs College.

The day was noted by judges for its high standard, making 1st place wins for SDC students, Polly Wood (Body Therapies), Abigail Cadle (Face & Body) and 3rd place Alannys Diaz (Body Therapies) all the more impressive. SDC alumna and 2017 World Skills gold winner – the highest award – Kaiya Swain was in attendance and said of the competition, “You might start off filled with nerves, but competing makes you much more confident, it makes you believe in yourself. And competing in the World Skills means your standard of skill is high.” Also present was another SDC alumna, Becky West, who won levels 2 & 3 of the national heats and is now on the UK Squad competing for the World Skills. “I’ve learned so much about both mind set and communication doing these competitions. I’m a shy person by nature, but competing has strengthened my confidence. It has brought me out of my shell.”

The competitors performed with the utmost professionalism. Nothing was amiss, attention to the smallest of details were thoroughly checked. The national competition is awarded on a points based system, so our college’s finalists will now wait to see if they will be competing in the national finals at the NEC in Birmingham.

Good luck girls!
