Rail Students take advantage of new facilities

Rail track training in Lewes

East Sussex College students studying the NVQ Level 2 Track Engineering pre-employment course are now taking advantage of the newly established, dedicated rail track.

The College has taken a significant stride in enhancing its vocational training offerings with the establishment of the new rail track.

Rail students, William Chitty and Chris Bayliss, spoke to the College about the benefits of the track, and also the developing learning experience that aligns with the demands of the rail engineering industry.

William Chitty“I decided to study this course because I wanted a career change and learn something new in a professional industry to better my life,” said William. “I’m really impressed with the new track equipment, it’s really good. Something that’s been built personally for us to learn the track and the railway system.

“I’m loving the course, it’s really amazing. It’s something I never thought I’d enjoy, but now I’ve got into it, it’s something I want to carry on doing for the rest of my life. Support from my tutors has been brilliant. It’s been fun, educational and I’ve learnt a lot from his experiences on the track. After this course I’m hoping to get onto the tracks and learn as much as I can about the geometry of the tracks; working my way up in the industry.”

Chris BaylissSpeaking further about the benefits of the course, Chris said, “This course offers me better opportunities and gives me different paths I cant take down the line. The new rail track equipment is very impressive. It’s very useful and a great hands-on way to learn and understand how the track comes together.

“The support from the tutors has been very handy. They obviously come from the rail industry themselves so they’re very experienced and know what they’re talking about. After this course I’m hoping to either get into welding or maybe move abroad, it’s a ticket that can take you anywhere in the world. I enjoy working with all the people on this course, they’re a good laugh. We bounce off each other, it’s a great environment to work in.”

The Pre-Employment Rail course is six weeks-long and provides participants with a comprehensive curriculum, culminating in a diploma that equips them with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in rail engineering.
