The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton got a splash of colour with a new safari-themed mural. Painted by Sussex Downs College students Lydia Duursma, Felix Scott, Jasmine Corkhill and Jamie Hildick-Smith, the project took a week to complete and is now an uplifting source of colour on the Critical Care Ward. Sand was also mixed in with the paint, to add a textural element for patients to enjoy.
James DiBiase, course leader of the Art & Design Diploma at the College said of the project, “This is the third year running that Art & Design Diploma students from Sussex Downs College have designed and produced a truly outstanding mural for the Alex. The students worked with a strong level of professionalism, engaging with the whole process with positive energy, enthusiasm and high levels of creativity.
Student Jamie Hildick-Smith, described painting the mural as a “Great experience. It was a lot of fun to work with Rockinghorse and the Alex on this project. It was so rewarding creating a mural that has received so much positive feedback and support, and all for a great cause. I hope it has really brightened up the hospital.

The students listened carefully to us. The top of the wall, passed by children on trollies, is calm and safe, no scary eyes or teeth, nothing to make it's way into a sick child's dreams. The bottom, explored by babies and toddlers, is bright, bold shapes that are good to touch
