College Celebrates Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month, Sussex Downs College has many activities running until the end of October.

At its Lewes campus, the college is currently holding an exhibition of work by A Level students inspired by their recent visit to the Tate Modern ‘Soul of a Nation’ exhibition of black artists. This was a remarkable opportunity for the students to experience era-defining artworks that changed the face of art in America in the 1960s and 70s, and produce their own interpretations of the works.

To inspire and inform learners and staff about the huge contribution that African and African Caribbean writers continue to make to our literary culture, the Learning Centres at both the Eastbourne and Lewes campuses are featuring displays highlighting the work of black authors and poets throughout the month.

Alongside the stunning artwork and literary history on display, the college is running a poster campaign profiling black role models at the top of a wide range of professions, and college canteens are offering an exciting menu of Caribbean and African food on Wednesdays and Fridays until the end of the month.
