College Hosts Successful Halfords Assessment Day

College Hosts Successful Halfords Assessment Day

East Sussex College welcomed representatives from Halfords (17th June) for an exciting and productive Assessment Day aimed at selecting candidates for two apprenticeship roles at Halfords Autocentres.

The event was a key opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills and potential to prospective employers.

The day commenced with an insightful presentation by Halfords, outlining the company’s operations and the opportunities available at over 600 garages nationwide, including the specific roles at their Newhaven and Eastbourne centres. Following the presentation, the students were tasked with a safety inspection assignment, showcasing their technical knowledge and attention to detail.

The assessment day continued with individual interviews where students were asked a range of questions about their aspirations, knowledge of Halfords, and their experiences at East Sussex College. The day concluded with personalised feedback for each student, helping them understand their performance and areas for improvement.

The event was facilitated by two of Halfords' Regional Support Managers, Jim Glen and Nick Barrett, who worked closely with the College’s staff to ensure the day ran smoothly. Four of ESC’s outstanding Level 2 Motor Vehicle students—Ryan Carey, Ryan Stewart, Jayden Abbott, and Jess McCann—participated in the assessment. Each student displayed commendable enthusiasm and proficiency, reflecting the high standards of training provided by East Sussex College.

All participating students are poised to progress onto the Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship, which includes day-release training from our Eastbourne campus. The College also offers the Level 2 Autocare Technician Apprenticeship, ensuring a comprehensive pathway for students aspiring to excel in the automotive industry.

Ryan Carey and Ryan Stewart will do a week of work experience at the Eastbourne branch, while Jess McCann and Jayden Abbott will head to Newhaven. After this, two students will be chosen to start their apprenticeships at Halfords Autocentres, beginning their careers in the automotive world.

Katie Parris, Account Manager in Business Development at East Sussex College, said, “East Sussex College is proud of our students’ achievements and grateful for the partnership with Halfords, which provides valuable opportunities for our students to gain real-world experience and advance their careers.”
