East Sussex College Home to Wyntercon VI

Eastbourne Sports Park, based on campus at East Sussex College Eastbourne, has been announced as the new venue for sci-fi festival Wyntercon, returning in 2019

It’s a conventional family like never seen before as the South Coast’s biggest sci-fi convention and registered charity, Wyntercon, returns in 2019 at a new home: Eastbourne Sports Park at East Sussex College. And for all involved, it’s a family tie worth celebrating.

“Holding Wyntercon VI at Eastbourne Sports Park lets us work with College staff and students in a creative, hands-on aspect,” explains Andy Kybett, Wyntercon Founder. “We look forward to working with course areas including Construction, Theatrical Make-up and Art and Design throughout the year.”

The Wyntercon Festival is Wyntercon’s annual showcase fundraiser. All proceeds from the event go to help Wyntercon, as a registered charity, do more work within the local community.

Throughout the year, Wyntercon delivers hands-on workshops, activities and educational programs to encourage and develop organisational, Interpersonal, communication and life skills to individuals who are disabled or from an underprivileged or disadvantaged background. Through their work, Wyntercon embraces the creative media sector and encourages learners to take an active part in their local community.

“The event we are bringing to the College is a family-friendly fundraiser, with a variety of all-age workshops in arts and crafts, a good selection of activities including a Jedi fight academy, circus skills, photo ops with props from franchises like Game of Thrones and Dr Who, steampunk, pirates, cosplay and more.”

Also exhibiting will be a number of local businesses showcasing their wares in costume-making, print memorabilia, medieval swords, role-playing games and cosplay. The event will also feature local artists and authors from schools and establishments like the Devonshire Collective.

The sci-fi and cult horror genres have a loyal fan following, with cosplay increasing popular at events worldwide. There’s an undeniable appeal of stepping away from reality to indulge in a fantasy world complete with superheroes and villains. And with returning cult favourites like Doctor Who being introduced to a new generation of viewers, there has never been a better time than to witness the ‘East Sussex College Dalek Project, a current work in progress by the Motor Vehicle team and various courses and companies within the community.

The inside space and outside area of Eastbourne Sports Park is the perfect setting for Wyntercon VI. The event has grown in size each year and welcomes special guests including actors, SFX artists and illustrators to the South Coast.
