Eastbourne Mayor Inspires ESOL Students at East Sussex College

Eastbourne Mayor with Eastbourne students

Eastbourne Mayor, Candy Vaughan, visited East Sussex College's Eastbourne campus, inspiring ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students with her story and insights.

The Mayor began her visit at 10am in Grove House, where she met with pre-entry level students in a class led by their teacher, Tabita Davis. The students enthusiastically shared their learning experiences, and the Mayor offered words of encouragement as they continued their English language journey.

At 10:30am, the visit moved to Kings Restaurant, where the Mayor delivered an engaging presentation to a larger group of ESOL students. She spoke about her role as Mayor, her journey into public service, and the importance of embracing new opportunities.

A dynamic Q&A session followed, with students asking thoughtful questions and gaining valuable insights. The visit provided an incredible opportunity for ESOL students to practise their language skills in a real-world setting while learning more about local leadership and community engagement.

Mark Allen, International Director at East Sussex College, said, “East Sussex College was delighted to welcome the Worshipful Mayor Candy Vaughan to meet ESOL students on our Eastbourne campus. The Mayor first met young asylum seekers who have only recently arrived in the UK and took questions from them about her role. She then moved on to a larger meeting with 100 ESOL learners of all agents and from all corners of the globe.

“She talked movingly about her own life and the personal issues she has overcome. She also talked about how much she loved her role as Mayor and took many questions from the students including requests for more opportunities to talk to local people. Students talked about how welcome they feel in Eastbourne and appreciated the Mayor taking time out of her busy schedule to see them.”

East Sussex College is grateful to Mayor Candy Vaughan for her time and inspiration, which left a lasting impression on both students and staff.
