East Sussex College is proud to share the inspiring story of Louise Herriott, who is currently excelling in her Level 3 Team Leader apprenticeship while working within the NHS.

Louise’s journey highlights the power of apprenticeships in opening doors to career advancement and personal growth, all while balancing the demands of work and family life.

Louise joined the NHS in her mid-30s, facing the challenges of being a new parent and seeking stability. Traditional educational routes were not feasible for her at the time, but an apprenticeship presented a perfect opportunity to grow professionally.

“I joined the NHS in my mid-30s. I was past school age and wasn’t financially stable enough to go back into full-time education. I had also just had my first child. The options were presented to me, and at the time, I felt like it would give me a good opportunity to push for promotions in the workplace,” Louise shared.

Having successfully completed a Business Administration apprenticeship, Louise secured a role in line with her training. Encouraged by her tutor, she decided to further her development by pursuing the Level 3 Team Leader apprenticeship.

“This is my second apprenticeship. I completed Business Administration and was successful in achieving a position with the same title. My tutor suggested that this course was available and would benefit me in my new role. I agreed, and so I signed up,” said Louise.

Louise’s apprenticeship experience has been both rewarding and flexible, thanks to the online nature of the training provided by East Sussex College.

“Most of my course has been online, which allows me to be as flexible as possible with my study. It means that as a single working parent, I can still develop my skills in the working environment,” she said.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Louise has gained invaluable skills that have enhanced her performance at work and broadened her perspective on project management.

“I have learnt about project techniques I may not have considered otherwise. This has allowed me to take on tasks that perhaps I would have passed aside or done in a different way,” Louise reflected.

Her line managers’ support and her own commitment to encouraging her team to pursue learning have further enriched her journey. “It’s been good. My line managers have been supportive, and likewise, I am supportive of my team in pursuing study. I think studying is a valuable skill that we will all benefit from,” she added.

Louise’s strong relationship with her tutor has been a cornerstone of her success. “My tutor has been with me since I first started studying. We work well together, and she understands me and my working style,” she said.

Looking ahead, Louise is eager to continue her ascent within the NHS. “My plan was always to climb the career ladder within my current company. I plan to continue studying after I have completed this course.”

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, Louise’s enthusiasm is contagious. “How can I support you to get into study! Absolutely do it. You will really enjoy it,” she encouraged.

Louise’s story is a testament to the transformative power of apprenticeships. East Sussex College is proud to support individuals like Louise as they pursue their career aspirations and unlock their potential.
