Joe WatsonFrom producing Premier League highlights to working on a BAFTA-winning production, Joe’s journey is a testament to following your passions and forging your own path.

Joe chose to study Media, Photography, and PE at East Sussex College because these subjects aligned with his love of sports, cameras, and technology. While his A-Level combination wasn’t the most conventional, Joe believes in the value of making strategic choices from a young age.

“I believe in following your own path and being strategic with your choices, even from a young age,” Joe explains.

The support and encouragement Joe received from his tutors at the College were pivotal in shaping his confidence and career direction. “My tutors provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge that enabled me to feel confident at university and get a foot on the ladder in a competitive industry,” he says.

Joe pursued a degree in Sports Journalism at Southampton Solent University, drawn by its innovative approach to multimedia skills and excellent facilities. At the time, it was the only degree of its kind, offering a future-proof entry into the evolving sports media industry.

One of the highlights of Joe’s early career was working on the BAFTA-winning production for the 145th Open Championship. Reflecting on the experience, Joe says, “Working on a prestigious sporting event so early in my career was an eye-opening experience. I realised the vast number of people behind the scenes who bring stories to life and felt privileged to be a small part of that.”

Joe’s role at Sky Sports involves producing video content for the website, app, social media, and YouTube channels. On Premier League match days, he produces and edits short-form highlights.

“I would be watching sport at home anyway, so being paid to watch it is super cool,” Joe says. “I’m immensely grateful to do something I love.”

For students aspiring to careers in sports journalism or media production, Joe emphasises the importance of passion, initiative, and ambition. “Pursue what you enjoy, create your own opportunities, and DREAM BIG!”

He also highlights the significance of networking: “Building connections with local media professionals in Eastbourne and Sussex was essential when I first started out. It helped me to get vital experience and opportunities which got me ahead of my competitors.”

Looking back at his time at East Sussex College, Joe credits his tutors for fostering his creativity and allowing him to experiment. “My tutors gave me the freedom to express myself, which unlocked a creative side I didn’t know I had and enjoyed. I felt like I had the licence to experiment, fail and learn in a safe environment, which is crucial when aiming to create.”

Joe’s journey from East Sussex College to Sky Sports demonstrates the power of pursuing your passions, taking strategic steps, and seizing opportunities.
