From East Sussex College to Oxford University

East Sussex College A-Level student, Charlie Tanner, has received a conditional offer to study at Oxford University.

Charlie has continued to excel in his A-Level courses. Thriving in subjects including English Literature, History, and Politics, Charlie has consistently demonstrated a passion for learning and personal development.

In his own words, Charlie reflects on the moment he received the offer from Oxford. “To be perfectly honest when I saw that Oxford had made me an offer I genuinely didn't believe it. I was happy with my application to the university, but the chances of acceptance were so low that I had no anticipation of being accepted. I'm planning to read History and Politics at Lincoln College.”

Charlie has set his sights on diverse career paths, including the Civil Service, Teaching, or working for a Non-Governmental Organisation involved in Politics. His ambitions reflect his commitment to making a meaningful impact in society.

Speaking on the support from his tutors, Charlie said, “When I started at ESC I didn't intend to apply to Oxford, it was only after meeting my Form Tutor that I was told my GCSE average was the highest she'd ever seen and that she wanted me to go to Oxford or Cambridge that I considered applying. While I know my grades are hardly anything impressive, receiving academic validation had a significant impact on making me want to apply.”

Charlie’s passion for History has developed throughout his time at ESC and he outlined the importance of his tutors.

“I thoroughly enjoy interacting with History. My real 'passion' for the subject started in secondary school when a combination of the right teachers at the right time led me to start exploring the subject. That lucky streak has continued through college and unquestionably I've been shaped by some amazing lecturers during my time at ESC.”

Charlie emphasised the impact that the College has had on his development, and recommended it to other students looking to pursue their dream careers. “I believe ESC is a fantastic College and think it had a serious impact on both my professional and personal development.”
