From East Sussex College to The Voice UK: Kailun Dennie's Inspiring Journey

Kailun Dennie

Kailun Dennie, a talented East Sussex College alumnus, has taken his passion for performing arts to extraordinary heights, recently gracing the stage of The Voice UK.

His journey from studying at East Sussex College Lewes to performing on one of the UK’s most prestigious singing competitions is a story of determination, growth, and dedication.

Kailun DennieKailun began his post-college journey by gaining a place on the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre Performance course at the University of Chichester. After graduating, he performed with TUI Blue Holidays as a singer, entertaining guests across various resorts abroad.

But Kailun’s desire to carve his own path in music led him to explore his own sound and songwriting abilities. Reflecting on his experience, Kailun shared, “What separated me from other artists was my passion for music and writing.”

It was this drive that motivated him to take a leap of faith and audition for The Voice UK after the pandemic. Kailun said, “I decided on a whim... to get back on my feet to audition for The Voice UK, and was lucky enough to get on and be part of Team Leanne Rimes.”

His time at East Sussex College played a crucial role in shaping his career. “Without the team at Lewes, a huge shout-out to my number one man Stan, I would not have made it. The training there was so fundamental, and really pushed me to my limits, showing me I am more than I let myself be.

“Without the College, I would have not made it at all. It taught me so much about the next steps in life, and made me realise this is what I have to do when I grow up.

Stepping onto The Voice UK stage was both thrilling and terrifying for Kailun. “To this day, the scariest thing I have ever done,” he admitted. “You take such a risk with it all and put so much love and devotion into your song choice. But it showed me, with a strong mind and determination, anything truly is possible.”

Kailun’s talent earned him two chair turns during the blind auditions, securing his place in the call backs. Although he was knocked out before the semi-finals, he reflected on the experience as a fierce competition that significantly boosted his confidence.

His advice to current East Sussex College students who are passionate about music or performing arts? “Keep pushing, go to everything you can, meet people, network... stay in your own lane. It is so easy to compare, and to constantly be doubting your ability, but there is only one YOU, and YOU are so important, and bring something to the industry no one else can bring.”

As for what's next, Kailun’s future is packed with exciting opportunities. He is currently performing in the SpongeBob musical with Nickelodeon and preparing for his first headlining show in East Sussex this winter. Looking ahead, he hopes to embark on a tour with his agency next year.

Kailun’s inspiring journey showcases how East Sussex College helped pave the way for his thriving career in the industry, and his story serves as a powerful reminder to follow your passion!
