Performing Arts Alumna set for Debut Performance

Martha Canning

East Sussex College Lewes Dance and Performing Arts alumna, Martha Canning, has excelled since leaving the College in 2010 and is preparing for her debut performance and dance workshop taking place during Brighton Fringe at Brighton Spiegeltent this May.

Martha is set for her debut performance during Brighton Fringe starting on 11 May 2022. The ‘Getting to Know You’ dance show has been created and will be performed by Martha in collaboration with fellow ESC alumna Chess Dillon-Reams.

The Brighton dance artists are ready to present a new dance work titled ‘Getting To Know You’, which is a highly physical solo dance piece. The dance show is described as a “journey into self-inquiry” and the work aims to “creatively portray the multitude of emotions that come with learning who you are, promoting positive attitudes to discovering authentic relationships, and understanding of ourselves.”

Speaking about her upcoming performance, Martha said, “I am very excited for my first participation in Brighton Fringe, especially to be performing in such a beautiful venue, Brighton Spiegeltent. I am so pleased to be showcasing new work very personal to me through the joy of dance and sound!”

Martha also spoke about how studying at East Sussex College has helped her as she continues further into a career in the industry.

Martha said, “Myself and Chess Dillon-Reams (supporting artist to the work) both studied A-Level Dance, Performing Arts & Performing Arts Dance at Lewes campus and both left in 2010.

“My teachers at the college supported my ambition to dance professionally and offered versatile training, dance techniques and created opportunities to choreograph my own work for end of term shows. I gained confidence in my own abilities at college and therefore was prepared for the next steps where I completed a BA (HONS) Degree in Contemporary Dance at Northern School Of Contemporary Dance (2013) & a Masters Degree in Dance Performance at Trinity Laban (2014).”

She added, “I would recommend Dance and Performing Arts courses at the college. I had a lot of fun with plenty of creative and performative opportunities and thanks to my passionate teachers I knew a career in dance was possible!”
