Public Services students paid visit by Border Force and ICE team

East Sussex College Lewes students studying Level 3 Uniformed Public Services had an important visit earlier this week from the Border Force and the Immigration Compliance and Enforcement (ICE) team.

The visit provided students studying Uniformed Public Services with an invaluable opportunity to hear and learn from the very best, firsthand.

It proved to be a wonderful experience for the students to be able to have visitors on site to give them a deeper insight into Immigration Enforcement and Border Force.

Additionally, East Sussex College welcomed back one of their former Level 3 Uniformed Public Services students, Samuel Battrum, who left the College in 2013 after completing his course.

Samuel provided current students with an opportunity to see firsthand that the pathway into the industry is there, as he achieved his goal and is now working as part of the ICE team.

Carey Bridge, Sport and Uniformed Services lecturer in Lewes, said, “ICE gave an excellent presentation about job roles and how to join etc, then split the students into groups so they could all have a chance to handcuff each other and learn how to use a baton! Students then went outside to go through all the gear that is used if ICE needs to enter the premises. They were excellent and we will be having them again.

“One of the officers was Samuel Battrum, who got the Level 3 Extended Diploma in 2013. There were also two Border Force officers who gave a brief talk and showed off some of their kit. We usually go to London Gatwick Airport (LGW) for a day with them and will be doing so soon.”

Carey added, “These trips are just brilliant for the students to help them decide their future options. A lot are now considering ICE rather than the police as a job. When the students get hands on and close interaction it really brings the roles alive and the students just love it.”
