Francis Petersen’s story is a great example of how an apprenticeship can lead to a rewarding future in a high-demand sector. For Francis, choosing a Plumbing and Domestic Heating apprenticeship was about starting a career that suited his strengths and long-term ambitions.
“I decided to take a Plumbing and Domestic Heating apprenticeship because I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and build a career in a trade,” Francis said. “I’ve always been a hands-on person, and I’ve found that being in an office environment for too long doesn’t suit me. Plumbing and heating felt like a good choice because it offers long-term job opportunities and gives me the chance to keep developing my knowledge and skills.”
Now a Level 3 Plumbing & Domestic Heating Technician apprentice at East Sussex College, Francis works with BDM Plumbing and Heating Ltd based in Hastings, gaining hands-on experience in a varied and fast-paced environment.
“My role at BDM Plumbing and Heating is to work hard, stay keen, and take every opportunity to learn,” he said. “No two days are ever the same, which I enjoy because it helps me build my knowledge and experience across different types of work.”
That variety has helped him grow both practically and professionally, building confidence as well as technical skills.
“I’ve gained a lot of practical skills and knowledge throughout my apprenticeship. One of the most important things I’ve learned is how to overcome obstacles at work. If I come across a problem, I focus on finding the right solution rather than taking shortcuts.”
Francis added, “I’ve also built up my confidence, improved my practical skills on site, and developed a much better understanding of plumbing and heating systems through hands-on experience.”
Support from East Sussex College has also played an important role in his progress.
“East Sussex College has supported me throughout my apprenticeship whenever I’ve had questions or needed help. Teachers such as Lee and Dean have always taken the time to explain things clearly and teach me skills and knowledge that relate to real-life plumbing, which has been a big help to my development.”
One of Francis’s most rewarding experiences has been the opportunity to support others.
“My most rewarding experience during my apprenticeship has been getting to a stage where I’m able to help teach another apprentice at my firm, Ryan. I enjoy passing on what I’ve learned, and it’s even more rewarding because he is keen to learn and improve as well.”
Like many apprentices, balancing college work with site experience has been a challenge.
“One of the challenges I’ve faced during my apprenticeship has been balancing college work with site work. It can be difficult to do a full day’s work and then come home and find the energy to complete college work as well. However, I’ve learned that staying focused and managing my time properly is important, and in the end it will always be worth it because it is helping me build my future career.”
Francis believes apprenticeships are a strong alternative to university, especially for those who learn best by doing.
“I believe apprenticeships are just as valuable as going to university because everyone learns in different ways,” he said. “I struggled throughout secondary school with sitting in a classroom all day, so I understand that this way of learning does not suit everyone. Some people are far better with hands-on learning, and that is where they really excel. Apprenticeships give people the opportunity to gain practical skills and build a career in a way that suits them.”
His experience in industry has also shaped his professional approach.
Francis said, “Working for a company like BDM has shaped my understanding of the plumbing and heating industry by showing me how important it is to always be on the ball. It has taught me that being reliable, turning up on time, and being presentable are all a big part of the job. It’s not just about doing the work well, but also about carrying yourself professionally and taking pride in what you do.”
Looking ahead, Francis is focused on continuing to progress in the industry.
“My career goals after finishing my apprenticeship are to continue progressing within the company I am currently with or, one day, to start my own business. I want to put my hard work, dedication, and attention to detail into building a successful future for myself in the plumbing and heating industry.
“My advice to someone considering a plumbing and heating apprenticeship would be to remain patient and keep focused on the bigger picture. The money and hours may not be great at first, but over time the hard work starts to pay off. If you stay committed and keep learning, it can lead to a very good future.”
Francis’s story shows how apprenticeships can build not just skills, but confidence, direction, and a long-term career path.
