Art Students Collaborate with World-renowned Land Artist for ‘Walk the Chalk’

Walk the Chalk - a celebration of the King Charles III England Coast Path

Following their visit to the ‘Walk the Chalk’ site in June, Level 3 Art students are set to revisit the site this Friday (22 Sept) to continue their work with world-renowned land artist Chris Drury.

Walk the Chalk’ is a celebration of the King Charles III England Coast Path which will become the longest coastal trail in the UK when it’s completed. This is a five-day event based across South Hill Barn, Cuckmere Haven and the Seven Sisters, exploring local heritage through art and creativity.

Together with the world famous land artist Chris Drury, ESC Lewes students studying Level 3 Art visited the ‘Walk the Chalk’ site in June. Two Level 3 Art students, Evie Maynard and Rae Watt, worked alongside Chris to create a massive mural on the side of the South Hill Barn.

ESC alumnus Gus Baldwin, who studied Art at ESC Lewes, has also contributed to the project having crafted a metal sculpture of a crab. The whole group has created work which will feature in South Hill Barn. Students are preparing to return to the site on Friday (22 Sept) to see the final result and are proud to be involved in a project with such regional significance!

Art & Design lecturer James Dibiase also worked over the summer creating a set of seven birds (1.5m square) which are hanging alongside the work of the students.

James DiBiase, Art & Design lecturer at East Sussex College, said, “The students studying Art & Design Extended Diploma at the Lewes campus have been actively involved with this project since June and all their hard work, effort and creativity is now finally on display for this heritage and community arts project.

“Their work comprises a series of garlands adorned with delicate indigenous flowers of Sussex. On Friday when hopefully the weather has improved, there will be a trip out to see the other sculptures and then to see their work in situ. Hopefully we can celebrate this incredible experience and give it the exposure it fully deserves!”
