The tour included a behind-the-scenes look at wine production, a walk through the estate’s Flint Barns restaurant and rooms, and a session with one of Rathfinny’s wine experts.
Students discovered how Sussex DPO wines compare to Champagne, learning about grape-growing conditions and how climate change has influenced the industry. They also explored career opportunities in hospitality, guided by Jake Cranch, a proud ESC alumnus and current Restaurant Manager of Rathfinny’s Tasting Room.
Thanks to the visit, two students have secured work experience placements at Rathfinny under Jake’s mentorship. Jake, who is also a finalist for the prestigious Gold Scholarship for Service, will return to ESC in May to lead front-of-house service at an alumni dinner.
Last year, Jake returned to College to host a full dinner service with current students. Speaking about the experience, Jake said, “Coming back to college has been weird, but in a good way! It’s very nice and brings back good memories. I had good laughs here, a good time. It’s great to see the kitchens and how things have slightly changed and maybe how things are the same. It’s exciting.”
The visit showcased the exciting pathways in food and beverage, inspiring students to consider future careers in hospitality
