College Cooking Helps the Homeless

The Hospitality & Catering group at East Sussex College Eastbourne continues its fundraising efforts for Warming Up The Homeless this academic year.

Each academic year, students select a local charity to support, choosing Warming Up the Homeless for the 2019/20. Lockdown in March brought an abrupt end to fundraising, and Oliver Zecchin and Laura DaSilva Henrique, Kings Restaurant managers, presented £1,000 to the charity in the summer.

The new academic year and reopening of college saw the Hospitality & Catering department decide to continue raising funds for the homeless charity. Oliver and Laura also prepare meals for the charity in their own time outside of college.

Oliver Zecchin, who, along with Laura, prepares meals for the charity outside of college, comments, “We are so pleased to be supporting Warming Up The Homeless as our charity of the year for 2020/21. Throughout Covid-19, the community has responded to the charity’s call for support, which is needed now more than ever. The charity recently opened a shop on Devonshire Road in Bexhill, and, due to expansion, they are now leasing an outlet twice the size!”

“We are grateful for the continued support of East Sussex College,” says Trudy Hampton, CEO, Warming Up The Homeless. “We started out in 2015 as a small group of volunteers.Our mission is the same, but we’ve been able to increase the support we provide, which is just incredible. Our latest project set for the end of January 2021 is for an ambulance, housing a podiatrist, qualified counsellor, NHS mental health nurse, and GP. The ambulance will accompany the charity’s outreach vans on each round throughout the areas they cover.”
