East Sussex College apprentice shortlisted for national NCFE Aspiration Award

An East Sussex College apprentice has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award, recognising her dedication, compassion, and impact within the healthcare sector.

Susana Araujo Jacques has been named a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category at the NCFE [Northern Council for Further Education] Aspiration Awards 2026. The awards celebrate excellence across vocational and technical education nationwide, with winners set to be announced in June.

Susana, who is completing her Senior Healthcare Support Worker Level 3 apprenticeship with Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust at Brighton General Hospital, was recognised for her commitment to patient care and her strong professional development throughout her apprenticeship.

Reacting to the news, Susana said: “Being shortlisted for the NCFE Aspiration Awards means a lot to me, both personally and professionally. It recognises the effort, resilience, and passion I’ve put into my journey, and boosts my confidence in the progress I’ve made. It also motivates me to keep striving for more and serves as a reminder of how far I’ve come. Beyond that, I see it as an opportunity to represent others on a similar path, showing that dedication and perseverance can lead to meaningful recognition.”

Vicki Orbell, Head of Business Development at East Sussex College, said: “We are incredibly proud to see Susana recognised at a national level. Being named a finalist is a fantastic achievement and a testament to her commitment, professionalism and the positive impact she is making within healthcare.”

Susana highlighted how her apprenticeship has supported her growth, combining hands-on experience with structured learning to build her confidence, clinical knowledge, and professional skills - helping her earn recognition as an NCFE Aspiration Awards finalist.

“My apprenticeship has supported my development by giving me a strong balance of practical experience and structured learning,” she said. “It’s helped me build my knowledge, confidence, and clinical skills while applying what I learn directly in my role, as well as improving my communication, teamwork, and understanding of professional standards.”

Reflecting on her motivation to pursue a career in healthcare, Susana added: “I chose this apprenticeship because I want to make a real difference in people’s lives. Seeing the impact compassionate care has on patients inspired me to be part of that support.”

She also shared a proud moment from her role: “One moment that made me feel proud was supporting a patient who was feeling very anxious and overwhelmed. I took the time to listen, reassure them, and stay present until they felt calmer. Seeing the difference that compassion and patience made in that moment reminded me why I do this role.”

The winners of the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2026 will be announced in June.
