Exploring Career Paths: Work Placements

East Sussex College has offered invaluable work experience opportunities to first year students; a chance for them to explore possible career paths in their desired industries.

The work placements organised by the A-Level team at ESC Eastbourne offered an invaluable experience to first-year students. Placements provide an essential stepping stone towards their future careers, enriching their personal growth and helping them make informed decisions about their next steps.

Work experience (WEX) is an invaluable opportunity for students to gain practical insights into their desired fields of interest. Placements play a pivotal role in a student's personal and professional development, and provide a bridge between classroom learning and the real world.

In early June 2023, 34 A-Level first-year students embarked on external work placements. For many of these students, it was their first taste of the professional world.

Amber Morey and Abbi Enstone, two aspiring filmmakers and students at ESC Eastbourne, were excited to do their work experience at Racquet Studios, a renowned film studio in Sussex. Their placement provided them with the opportunity to develop their passion and learn about virtual production, operate camera equipment, and gain a deeper understanding of the film industry.

Speaking to the College, the pair said, “We chose to do placement at Racquet Studios because we are both passionate about film and this is a possible future career for us. We also wanted the opportunity to see how a film studio works. The overall experience was fascinating and rewarding. We learned about virtual production and had the chance to see it firsthand while also having the chance to use camera equipment. We also learnt more about the film industry and were in environments with people from that particular industry. We enjoyed our experience.”

For Mia Cassidy, her work placement at Bexhill Museum was a chance to delve into her passion for history. Mia had the opportunity to explore various aspects of museum work, from archaeology to visitor services. She had the opportunity to apply her knowledge and gain practical skills, knowing that her time at the museum would greatly benefit her future aspirations of studying history.

“I have always been interested in history, so a museum seemed ideal. Although it was a small museum, it was still very interesting and full of history. The experience was good,” said Mia. “I did multiple different things and experienced all aspects of museums. From archaeology to visitor services. I enjoyed doing archeology and working in the store room. We were able to sort out some finds from an old archeological dig in the 90s and put it into correct boxes.

“I am glad I did it as it is a good experience and it is helpful for what I want to do in the future. I am applying to history so it will look good on my personal statement.”
