From ESC to British Airways

Sophie McDonald-Lee, a former Air Cabin Crew student at East Sussex College, is flying high after completing her training with British Airways and joining their team as cabin crew.

Reflecting on her time at ESC, Sophie shared how the course helped her prepare for a career in aviation: “My course gave me the knowledge and understanding of the role and allowed me to be more confident in the interview and during my training. All airlines operate differently but the basics I was taught really provided my foundation.”

The Air Cabin Crew course at ESC offers students the chance to learn essential industry skills, from safety procedures to customer service.

Sophie said: “Being taught good communication skills and time management really helped me. The positive about the Hastings campus was the fuselage of the aircraft which gave me the reality of what I was doing.”

For Sophie, these experiences provided the perfect foundation for her role with one of the world’s leading airlines. “My tutors were amazing, caring and supportive and gave me the drive to begin my journey. They made the learning fun, and the College trip to Dubai was a fabulous experience and brought us all together. I wouldn't be working for our National Flag Carrier today if it wasn't for the support and understanding from Hayley and Louiza. I even stay in contact with them now.”

After graduating from the course last year, Sophie worked hard to secure her place at British Airways, completing an intensive training programme. “Once I completed the course, I had started the task of applying to different airlines, via the recruitment pages advertised,” said Sophie.

“I applied for Ascend Airlines and EasyJet before applying for BA. Both Ascend and easyjet placed me into a holding pool, ready for their next round of recruitment, however shortly after BA Euroflyer opened up, and after applying, a week later I was having my interview. Within 48 hours I was offered the position!”

She added, “My Training was due to start in January, however at the end of November they brought forward my start date to 12th December!”

Now, she’s ready to travel the world, meeting new people and embracing the exciting challenges of life in the skies.

Sophie has some words of wisdom for current students thinking about a career in aviation: “Never miss a lesson, as when with an airline missing any day will impact your learning and could jeopardise your position. Standards and quality are factors that the airlines look at, and if you can't go to college for the correct days, you will be seen as not being able to uphold their standards. Always study hard, as the things you learn support you in training, and never give up hope.”

Her story is a testament to where hard work, determination, and quality training can lead. Everyone at East Sussex College is incredibly proud of Sophie’s achievements and can’t wait to see where her career takes her next.

On her future plans and aspirations, Sophie said: “Working with British Airways is the top, I think so anyway! My aspirations for my career is to progress to Number 1 (Cabin Manager), or Senior Cabin Crew. I am getting paid to do a job I love, seeing the world and culture - can it get any better!”
