From Learning English to Landing a Job - Hamideh's Journey Through ESC

Hamideh’s journey with East Sussex College is a powerful example of where dedication, support, and practical skills can lead.

Originally from Iran, Hamideh began her time at the College by studying English through the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programme. With the help of supportive tutors and a welcoming learning environment, her confidence in speaking, reading, and writing English quickly grew.

“I enjoyed learning new things, meeting teachers and classmates, and making new friends at college. This course helped me learn English step by step. It also helped me become more independent in doing things and gave me more confidence.”

Looking to build on her progress, Hamideh went on to study the Level 2 Barista Skills course - and achieved a Distinction. The course gives students hands-on training in making high-quality coffee, customer service, and working in a café setting - all essential skills for jobs in the hospitality sector.

“In the Barista course, I learned about different types of coffee with my kind teacher Oliver. I learned how to make drinks like latte, cappuccino, hot chocolate, smoothies, tea, and more. I also learned how to serve them. Getting a Distinction made me feel proud and gave me more confidence.”

Recently, one of her former tutors spotted Hamideh working at a pop-up bistro evening at the Tennis Café in Gildredge Park, Eastbourne. What started as a volunteering role has now become a paid job, and Hamideh is thriving in her new position.

“I was looking for a job in a café, but since I had no experience, I decided to work as a volunteer first to get used to the environment. One day, I was walking past a Tennis Café and the beautiful decoration caught my attention. I asked if they needed a volunteer. The kind managers of this lovely café accepted me. I worked as a volunteer for about one month, and after that, they offered me a job.”

Hamideh added, “I enjoy the friendly relationship with the managers and the team. I also like making coffee, especially latte, and creating patterns on it. I enjoy talking to customers and learning new things in this happy and beautiful place.”

Her story is a testament to how college courses like ESOL and Barista Skills can open doors and give students practical pathways into employment.

“I hope to be useful in society and to grow in my job. College helped me not only to learn English, but also to gain skills, earn money, and have a happier life.”

We’re incredibly proud of Hamideh and everything she’s achieved so far - and we can’t wait to see what she does next.
