Game On: Esports Students Raise Over £670 for Care for the Carers

Competition, cosplay, live music, and community spirit took over the Lewes campus last week as Esports students at East Sussex College hosted their biggest charity event yet.

Held in Suman Hall on Wednesday 7th May, the student-led event brought together students, staff, and visitors for a full day of gaming and entertainment and raised an incredible £673 for Care for the Carers - exceeding the team’s original £500 fundraising target.

The packed event featured a high-energy Overwatch tournament with donation-powered forfeits, a cosplay competition, live music performances, guest speakers, food and refreshments, and prizes generously donated by Scan Computers.

The atmosphere throughout the day was electric, with students and staff embracing the spirit of the event through gaming, fundraising, and cosplay. Congratulations go to Atlas for winning the cosplay competition!

East Sussex College’s very own Heroes team were ultimately crowned tournament champions, while Bexhill Warriors were praised for putting up a fantastic fight in the Esports tournament.

The event also welcomed guest speaker Michael Odell (Now Chief Gaming Officer for ReKTGlobal and Managing Director for the Call of Duty franchise London Royal Ravens), who joined attendees to support the fundraiser and celebrate the growing Esports community at the College.

Organised entirely by Esports students, the event showcased not only gaming talent, but also teamwork, creativity, leadership, and event management skills.

Esports student, Joseph Highton, said: “It went incredibly well. The teams were strong, the layout was excellent, and the music really elevated the atmosphere. It was a really well-run event overall, and I’d love to see it return next year. It was also great to see money being raised for a good cause, which made the whole event feel even more worthwhile.”

Ian Golledge, Deputy Head of Curriculum for Digital Industries at East Sussex College, said: “Seeing our students organise and deliver an event of this scale has been fantastic. Not only did they create an exciting and inclusive experience for everyone who attended, but they also exceeded their fundraising target for an incredibly important local charity. The passion, professionalism, and teamwork shown throughout the event made everyone involved extremely proud.”

The annual charity event has quickly become a highlight of the Esports calendar at the College, combining gaming culture with fundraising and community impact.
