Gamers from across East Sussex came together on Thursday 8th May for an action-packed evening of friendly competition, live entertainment, and fundraising at the Charity Esports Tournament, held at Racquet Studios at East Sussex College Lewes.

The event, hosted in partnership with Care for the Carers and East Sussex College, brought students and gaming fans together to battle it out on screen, with every mouse click raising money for young and unpaid carers in the local area.

With the atmosphere buzzing, players competed in Overwatch 2, cheered on by a lively crowd of spectators who got involved in cosplay, music, and interactive fun. A special guest appearance by Michael ‘ODEE’ O’Dell – a legend in the esports world and Team GB’s Esports Olympic Manager – made the evening even more memorable. ODEE shared insight from his 25+ year career and inspired students with stories from the top tier of professional gaming.

Adding to the excitement, Josh Babarinde OBE MP – an East Sussex College alumnus and local Member of Parliament – came along to show his support for his former college. He even joined in the action, taking part in the all-star gaming tournament and cheering on students throughout the night.

The tournament was streamed live on Twitch, with donations rolling in via JustGiving. Alongside gaming, there were fun forfeits, a live band, prizes, and a trophy up for grabs – plus plenty of opportunities to meet new people and enjoy the incredible Racquet Studios setting (aka “a little bit of LA in Lewes”).

Funds raised will go towards supporting the 15,000+ young carers across East Sussex who help look after a loved one. Care for the Carers provides vital advice, support, and a sense of community for those young people balancing everyday life with major responsibilities at home.

Ian Golledge, Deputy Head of Curriculum for Digital Industries and Course Leader for Esports said, “The event was a great success, and I am very proud of the Esports students who set up and ran the whole thing. Money raised from JustGiving, company donations, and takings is more than £2000. Scan Computers, ESK Clothing, and Lewes Football Club donated prizes worth more than £1200.”

Thanks to everyone who played, spectated, and donated – and a massive shout-out to the students who helped make the night a success.
