East Sussex College welcomed the team from Halfords on Friday 6th June, giving students the chance to find out more about an exciting Motor Vehicle apprenticeship opportunity at their Brighton branch.

The visit, which follows last year’s successful recruitment day that led to the hiring of an apprentice in both Eastbourne and Newhaven, gave candidates insight into a Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician apprenticeship.

Jess Earnshaw, who was recruited during last year’s event and now works at Halfords Newhaven, has since gone on to win Apprentice of the Year at Halfords — showing just how far an opportunity like this can take you.

This year’s event kicked off with a presentation led by Neil Wood, Group Apprenticeship Coordinator, and Jim Glen, Regional Manager for Halfords. Attendees learned key details about the role including salary, working hours, staff benefits and training opportunities.

The successful apprentice will receive a tool kit (which they get to keep after finishing the course), have access to further technician and MOT tester training, plus get to take advantage of benefits like the cycle to work scheme and staff discounts on cinema tickets and restaurants.

After the presentation, candidates headed to the workshop for a practical task — completing a basic vehicle check — before ending the day with interviews.

Two potential apprentices took part: Jacob McMillan, a current Level 2 Motor Vehicle student at East Sussex College, and Nova Horscroft-Knowles, who applied externally. Both impressed the Halfords team with their questions and interview skills, and were offered work experience placements this June.

A final decision on who will take up the apprenticeship is expected soon, with the successful candidate starting in September.

Katie Parris, Business Development Advisor at East Sussex College, said: “It’s fantastic to see Halfords continuing to work so closely with the College and offering real progression routes for our students. Jacob and Nova both did brilliantly on the day — and with apprenticeships like this one, they’re gaining real skills, qualifications, and opportunities to build a career in the motor industry.”
