A floating raft of foiled wrapped objects, colourful papier-mâché teddy bears, and trees full of framed photographs are only some of the exciting student art work on display in their new home at Charleston Farmhouse, the home of the Bloomsbury group.

We are delighted to announce that Sussex Downs College in collaboration with The Charleston Trust have brought together a contemporary and innovative art exhibition to be staged at Charleston Farmhouse from Wednesday 14th March until Sunday 18th March. Students studying the Art & Design Diploma and Photography Subsidiary Diploma at Sussex Downs College, Lewes, were required to respond creatively and imaginatively to their project theme of ‘home’.

This vibrant show will include painting, printmaking, mixed media and photography displayed in a variety of locations including the café, shop and public lavatories as well as a number of sculptures on display in the beautiful Charleston gardens.

James DiBiase, Course Leader of the OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma, at Sussex Downs College coordinates the project.

“This opportunity to work on a ‘live brief’ with Charleston was incredibly exciting but also challenging for our learners. They all had to pitch their idea and present their final to Jemma, for approval. In addition, they had to actively work together in promoting and displaying the artwork. These are all employability skills they will need if they want to become successful artists or designers in the future.”

Jemma Paterson, Public Programmes Manager of the Charleston Trust.

“This has been a really successful project with Sussex Downs College. The work that they have produced is intelligent, sensitive and thought-provoking. I am really excited to see them all in-situ as it will transform the spaces.”

On Saturday 17th March from 10:00am till midday there is private view as well as an award ceremony for the best works on display as judged by members of the Charleston Trust, including Dr. Darren Clarke, the Rausing Head of Collection, Research and Archive.
