Lifelong Learning Week 2022

East Sussex College highlights the many positives of adult learning, and celebrates those who have retrained or upskilled to better their careers, ahead of Lifelong Learning Week in 2022.

The College has had numerous success stories involving adult learners who have chosen to upskill, proving there is no cut-off to learning!

Three BA (Hons) Designer Maker students at University Centre Hastings have had their work selected to be exhibited in the world's leading museum of art, design and performance, Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum, with two of these students having won City & Guilds national awards with cash prizes!

Alice Lawson, 28, won the Targett Award for her exceptional work titled ‘Tree of Life Body Sculpture’ which will be displayed at the V&A Museum. Alice also won a £1000 cash prize for winning the Targett Award.

Krysta Shiels, 43, is a mature student of Ukrainian origin, studying her Level 2 Certificate in Make-up at East Sussex College Hastings. In early March, desperate to support Ukraine following the Russian invasion, Krysta set up fundraising events to accrue donations to send money and resources back to her home country in support of her friends and family.

Aside from her fundraising, Krys is striving to educate and build bridges of communication for young people in Ukraine and in the UK. This is an angle she is passionate about as a former teacher.

David Fowler, head of Higher Education at East Sussex College, said, “Lifelong Learning Week presents the perfect opportunity to celebrate adult learning. We offer a wide range of degree courses with fantastic support and really great success rates, so you don’t have to worry if you’ve been out of education for a little while, or if you have other commitments while you study.

“If you’ve decided to change your career goals or want to retrain or upskill, then our degrees can open up so many opportunities for you, not just in the local area, but nationally and internationally.”
