Local Students Showcase Creativity in NHS Art Competition

East Sussex College has been celebrating the creativity of young artists from across the region, as local schools are taking part in a special NHS Art Competition.

The competition, run in partnership with the NHS, invites students to explore themes that connect art with wellbeing, community, and science. Schools across East Sussex have been invited to take part, with entries received from Gildredge House, Cuckmere House School, Woodland Mead College, The Eastbourne Academy, Stafford school, Beacon Academy, Hastings Academy and Blatchington Mill.

In total, an incredible 158 pieces of artwork were submitted across five inspiring categories:

  • Local Landscapes and Nature
  • Wellbeing and Healing
  • Community Spirit
  • The Wonders of Science
  • Journeys and New Beginnings

Each piece captured something unique - from detailed paintings and mixed-media pieces to digital artwork inspired by personal experiences, local places, and the natural world.

The NHS team visited East Sussex College to view the submissions and select the winning entries.

Julie Booth, Theatre Matron Anaesthetic Practitioner Team, said, “Thank you for inviting us to judge an amazing selection of artwork from schools across the local area. It was really challenging to select from such a talented range of individuals. Each one made us smile and all the pieces of art were thought provoking. Well done to all of those who took part, you are all winners for providing such wonderful entries.”

Dr Jessica Spiteri, Consultant Anaesthetist, said, "I just want to say a big thank you to all our young artists from across Sussex and their teachers and carers for sending in such lovely artwork. I was truly amazed by the creativity, thought, and effort that every child and young adult put in. This certainly made the selection process both inspiring and incredibly difficult! A day spent with us for day surgery is not a normal day. It can often bring a mix of emotions for our patients and their families. The beautiful artwork created by our young artists will help make that experience a little brighter, calmer, and more positive."

The winning artworks will soon be proudly displayed at the new Sussex Surgical Centre (SSC) at Eastbourne District General Hospital, offering a vibrant and uplifting environment for patients, visitors, and NHS staff.

This competition has given students a chance to express their creativity while reflecting on what community, healing, and connection mean to them - and to see their artwork make a difference in a real healthcare setting.
