The award was attended by Motor Vehicle tutor Lomax Challen-Hoad and Deputy Head of Curriculum Mark Streeter at a prize-giving ceremony, celebrating Edward’s hard work, dedication, and achievements.
Edward spent last year honing his skills in the College’s Body Repair Shop, completing his paint course with flying colours. His exceptional skills, attitude, and work ethic quickly caught the attention of local employers, and he has since secured a fantastic role at Californian Classics, a business renowned for restoring and customising classic vehicles.
This special award was made possible thanks to the Eastbourne Historic Vehicle Club, who approached the College with a sponsorship opportunity.
Together, they developed the “Most Employable Student” award to recognise students who demonstrate all the qualities employers look for – practical skills, a positive attitude, and strong professional ethics.
Speaking to the College about winning the award, Edward said, “Winning the most employable student award means a lot to me because I tried my hardest throughout the year to learn as much as possible. It just makes me feel like all the hard work wasn’t for nothing!
“The specific skills I gained from the course that are now helping me at work include mastering filler techniques and preparation processes. We learnt what happens if you don’t fill a dent correctly and the effect it has on the paintwork. Those skills have helped me massively at work.”
On support from tutors, Edward said, “The support from my tutors was amazing. They never get annoyed when I’m asking questions, I ask a lot of questions, and if something ever goes wrong they show me a way around it and are always there if you need help. Without Lomax, Dan or Ian [Edward’s tutors] I doubt I’d be in the position I am now.”
He added, “My advice to others would be don’t be afraid to ask questions. The tutors are there to help and guide you. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes as once you make them, the tutors will be more than happy to show you how to fix them. And my last bit of advice would be to learn how to make a good cup of tea!”
Mark Streeter, Deputy Head of Curriculum, said, “Edward embodies everything this award stands for. He’s not just talented in his craft but also displays the kind of mindset that employers value so highly. We’re incredibly proud of what he’s achieved and can’t wait to see how his career progresses.”
Edward’s journey is a shining example of where hard work and passion can lead. If you’d like to find out more about studying Motor Vehicle courses at East Sussex College, please click here.
