An exciting day for Lewes this past week, as on May 17 the town formally welcomed its new mayor.
Her Worshipful, The Mayor Councillor, Janet Baah (Lib Dem), originally from Ghana and who graduated from Brighton University with a Masters in Public Administration, will be the first minority ethnic mayor to be appointed in the history of Lewes.
The event took place at Lewes Town Hall and was attended by Sussex Downs College’s Schools Liaison, Race & Ethnicity Champion, Nigel Ryan; the High Commissioner for St. Lucia, the ex-MP for Lewes, Norman Baker; Maria Caulfield, MP for Lewes; John Agard, Queen’s Gold Medal for poetry; and Grace Nichols, Commonwealth Award for Literature.
Councillor Baah plans to work very closely with Sussex Downs College, Lewes to support projects and initiatives during the next 12 months in her new role which coincides with an exciting first year ahead for the College as part of the East Sussex College Group.
