Not Sure What To Study? We’ve Got You.

Not Sure What To Study? We’ve Got You.

So, you’ve been to our Open Events, and now you’re thinking about your next steps. Choosing what to study after school is a big decision - but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

At East Sussex College, we know that every student’s journey is different, and there are plenty of ways to help you make the right choice.

Hopefully, you asked plenty of questions at our October Open Events and got a real feel for how exciting college life can be. Now it’s time to start thinking about which subject you’d like to study.

If you’re still not sure which course is right for you, you could come back and see us at our November Open Event and explore the campus again, chat with tutors, and ask any questions you might have missed the first time around.

Or if you need a little help deciding between courses, read on for some useful advice to guide your choice.

1. Think about what you enjoy

A good place to start is by thinking about what really interests you. Do you love being creative? Are you fascinated by how things work? Or maybe you enjoy helping others? Your passions can be a great guide when it comes to choosing a course that feels exciting and rewarding for you.

Just look at Tayris Mongardi, who studied Performing Arts at ESC before going on to star in RuPaul’s Drag Race UK - proving that following your creative passions can lead to incredible opportunities.

2. Play to your strengths

Considering personal strengths is important too. Whether someone is a problem-solver, enjoys working with their hands, performing on stage, or leading a team, their skills can help shape which courses are the best fit.

Former East Sussex College student Josh Babarinde OBE MP is a perfect example. During his time at the college, Josh discovered his passion for leadership and community action – strengths that have guided his remarkable journey from student to social entrepreneur and now Member of Parliament for Eastbourne. Recently inducted into the Association of Colleges’ FE Hall of Fame, Josh continues to champion education and opportunity, proving how recognising and developing your strengths in college can open doors to extraordinary futures.

3. Explore career goals

Some students already know the career they want - others don’t, and that’s okay. Those with a dream job in mind can look at the qualifications they’ll need, while anyone unsure can choose courses that keep options open and build valuable skills for the future.

ESC student Lucas Radev Roig is a great example - originally from Spain and now studying A-Levels in Biology, Environmental Science, and Marine Science in Lewes, he’s taking on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race as part of Team UNICEF. His studies have deepened his passion for the ocean and environmental issues, inspiring him to pursue a future in Zoology. Lucas’s story shows how the right courses can help you explore your interests, grow in confidence, and set sail toward exciting global opportunities.

4. Do some research

East Sussex College offers a wide range of subjects and pathways – from A-Levels to Technical and Professional Courses and Apprenticeships. Each route has its own benefits, so it’s worth taking the time to explore them.

5. Visit an Open Event (and look out for College tours)

Still deciding which course suits you best? Join us at our November Open Event! It’s a great opportunity to take another look around campus, talk with our tutors and students, and get answers to any lingering questions before you apply.

We’ll also be running College tours soon, so you can take a closer look at day-to-day life at ESC and get a real feel for what studying here is like.

6. Ask for advice

There’s no need to make the decision alone. East Sussex College advisers, tutors, and the careers team are always available to talk through options and help students choose the course that best fits their goals.
