The show’s debut run drew excellent reviews and strong audience responses, something Alfie is particularly proud of. A professional fringe reviewer, Paul Levy, described it as: “A boldly penned solo theatre piece, which marks an impressive debut in the challenging field of psychological drama and horror!”
The show also received the ‘Recommended Youth Theatre’ award by Fringe Review UK, recognising Alfie’s talent and hard work at a national level.
Alfie described the story behind his play: “The Shadow in the Mirror is an original one man play that I’ve created and performed in. The show is about Edwin Ashcroft and his betrayal of self trust. The show starts with Edwin admitting that he’s committed a heinous crime and overtime his guilt begins to eat away at him.”
Reflecting on the creative journey Alfie admitted that writing and performing a solo show is a challenge, but one that has brought huge rewards: “It’s not been an easy journey by any means. I’m constantly changing/rewriting the script to ensure it has a lasting effect on the audience. However, it has been a very rewarding process that I'm truly grateful for. To gain interest from the industry is very exciting as it’s now begun to venture out of the south coast! Big things are coming soon is all I'm going to say.”
One of the highlights of his experience so far has been seeing his work come alive on stage for the first time: “My standout moment would be the sold out opening night [at The Yellow Book, Brighton]. Getting to perform this brand new show in front of such a supportive audience and then hearing the feedback and response from them was all emotional. It was the first time that I was able to show something I made and was truly proud of!”
Alongside his growing success, Alfie says his course at the Lewes campus of East Sussex College has given him the support, skills, and confidence to pursue his creative ideas: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here at Lewes. I’ve made many great memories along the way and it will be sad when I leave!”
He also explained how what he’s learned in class has directly helped him in developing the play: “A major skill that I've taken with me in creating my own work would definitely be working to deadlines as well as communication/teamwork. Yes, it’s a one man show that I've written, directed and performed but I've had an amazing team who work with me to give feedback and help me with costume, sound, lights and much more.”
When asked what he’s enjoyed most during his studies, Alfie pointed to the variety and people at college: “My favourite part of studying here at Lewes would definitely be the fact that everyday is so different as well as the people there.”
Alfie was also quick to recommend the Performing Arts Acting course to others who are considering following in his footsteps: “Yes definitely!”
Looking ahead, Alfie is excited to continue sharing his work with new audiences: “Well, The Shadow in the Mirror is just about to head to Sweet at the Yellow Book (in Brighton) for 2 nights to celebrate Brighton HorrorFest and this year it’s extra special as it’s their 10th year anniversary.”
