Archie Kahlow, a Level 3 Plumbing apprentice at East Sussex College, is making significant strides in his career with the support of his employer, Knight & Davey Plumbing.

“The main reason was I have always struggled in the traditional education environment, so myself and my parents thought that it would be best for me to learn a trade and engross myself in the working world,” Archie shared. “The main reason I chose plumbing was because it's such a varied trade from oil to gas to commercial systems, and the qualification is internationally recognised. One day I would consider owning my own company.”

Through his apprenticeship, Archie has not only honed his technical skills but has also grown personally. “I have learned a lot about adult life via my work. It has definitely made me mature as a person and improved my confidence,” he reflected. Now nearing the end of his apprenticeship, Archie acknowledges his remaining areas for growth, stating, “My most unskilled area has to be in general plumbing and heating.”

Archie's training at East Sussex College combines practical work experience with in-depth theoretical knowledge. “My training through college has been great. I usually go to college one day a week, and we cover all aspects of plumbing with an emphasis on theory. All of the tutors have years of industry experience, and their knowledge is invaluable,” he explained.

The support Archie receives extends beyond the classroom. “My assessor has been great. He constantly provides me with the help and reassurance I need to help me complete my portfolio. I couldn’t ask for a better assessor,” he added.

Looking ahead, Archie is keeping his options open but has aspirations of entrepreneurship. “I'm not completely sure of my career aspirations yet. I think I need more time to think, but the concept of running my own business is appealing.”

When asked what advice he would give to others considering an apprenticeship, Archie didn’t hesitate. “I would tell them to go for it. The practical experience and getting paid to learn is something that shouldn't be passed up.”

Archie's success story highlights the value of apprenticeships in providing hands-on experience, industry-recognised qualifications, and personal growth opportunities.

His journey with Knight & Davey Plumbing and East Sussex College showcases the potential for apprentices to thrive in both their careers and personal development.
