Working with the Matthew 25 Mission

Prince’s Trust students

Prince’s Trust students

Sussex Downs College students involved with the Prince’s Trust programme recently (week of June 25th) participated in an admirable community project.

The group painted planters and filled these with fresh herbs for the Matthew 25 Mission, a local charity which provides pastoral care, advice and basic necessities for people in need. The students also sanded and re-varnished benches and planted some perennials in memory of one of the charity’s guests, Tracy Patsalides, who sadly lost her life that same week. Several fundraising events, which the team organised, were held beforehand, such as a cake sale and sponsored walk.

The team’s leader, Lorna Gordon described the project as one which “encouraged students’ awareness and accessibility to the issues surrounding homelessness and vulnerable people. The group learned that homeless people are simply just people facing a challenge. The project allowed them to explore and engage with the stereotype of homelessness in a safe, supported and extremely welcoming environment, where they were shown equality and kindness by all.”

A very good deed and noble effort, well done to all those who participated.
