Student Shortlisted for National Moving Image Awards

Jamie Clark, a UAL Level 3 Foundation Art & Design student in Hastings, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Moving Image Awards, placing him among just four students nationally in the music video category.

Jamie, who studied A-Levels at Station Plaza before starting the one-year foundation diploma in Art & Design, actually created the shortlisted piece as part of his A-Level Media Studies coursework last year. Tasked with producing a music video for a song that didn’t already have one, he chose Palisades by Childish Gambino and cast his friend Luc, also an East Sussex College student, as the artist Rodrigo Nalas. His work earned full marks for creativity, direction and editing.

Reflecting on his creative approach, Jamie said, “The brief for my media coursework was to create the marketing for a globally recognised artist. My mind went immediately to summer pop music videos from the 2010s that typically showcase the glamorous lifestyle that comes from being a successful and popular musician.”

He added, “I purposely parodied this style of music video as I thought it was the most recognisable representation of worldwide stardom within the modern age and would reflect the brief in a simple yet effective way.”

“Jamie’s approach and skills are outstanding,” said Media tutor Elyse Patterson. “He wanted to create a nostalgic 90s music video that captured a lot of the tropes of boy bands and pop music videos of that time. I think it does a brilliant job and even includes 90s film references. His skills as a director, Director of Photography, and editor really shine through, as does his sense of humour!”

Jamie described how it felt to be shortlisted for a national award.
“When I found out I had been shortlisted for the Moving Image Award I felt very excited and lucky to have been selected for my work,” said Jamie. “It’s very validating to know that all my hard work paid off and knowing that what I made is viewed by adults and professionals to be objectively impressive.”

He also credited his time at East Sussex College with helping him develop both creative and critical skills.
“Media Studies really helped me with my understanding of media language, representation within media and how it is produced and received within the world.”

Looking ahead, Jamie has clear ambitions for his future in the industry. He said, “I want to go on to be really successful in the filmmaking industry and earn my place on professional productions on set. I really love all aspects of filmmaking but the dream is to become a cinematographer, or a writer/director.”

Jamie’s shortlisting is another example of the creative brilliance and recognition East Sussex College students get on a national level.

The winner of the moving image award will be announced on 13th February at the British Film Institute awards ceremony and we have everything crossed for Jamie.
