Jess, who studies in the Motor Vehicle department at the college, has been competing against more than 200 Halfords apprentices from all over the UK, aiming for recognition from some of the biggest names in the automotive industry - and now she’s done it.
The road to victory wasn’t easy. Jess first had to complete an online exam and submit a personal written statement to make it through the initial selection stage.
“I did an online exam and a personal written statement,” Jess explained. “Then me and 15 others got asked to do a practical assessment in Basingstoke consisting of four tasks - a vehicle inspection, brakes, steering and suspension, and electrical. All of which were fault-finding.”
From there, Jess advanced to the final stage, which took place in Carlisle at the Pirelli headquarters. There, she took part in interviews and final assessments alongside a small group of finalists, all vying for the title.
“At the finals I underwent interviews in the hope of winning the Halfords Apprentice of the Year award,” said Jess. “I got the chance to see where they make all the tyres at Pirelli, and meet with different COs and directors of Halfords.”
Now that she’s claimed the title, Jess’s win not only celebrates her technical skills but also places her firmly in the spotlight among industry leaders.
Everyone at East Sussex College is incredibly proud of Jess and her achievement. Her success is a testament to her dedication, talent, and passion for the motor vehicle industry. Well done, Jess!
