Taban shared her powerful story of survival and resilience, opening up about the traumatic experiences she faced and how those experiences inspired her to support women and girls affected by conflict.
Originally from a Kurdish background, Taban and her family moved to the UK when she was a child. Her early experiences shaped her understanding of resilience, empathy, and the importance of standing up for others, values she now brings to her work supporting women and girls around the world.

Her honesty, courage, and hope left students inspired and reflective, encouraging them to think about the difference they can make in the world.
Two students, including Kerola Kozlova, had the opportunity to ask Taban questions and gain insight into her journey.
Kerola, studying A-Levels in Acting, Film Studies, and English Language & Literature, said "It was an incredible opportunity to speak to someone so inspiring and passionate about their work. I had a great time and improved my public speaking skills, so it was a win-win."
The talk was a reminder of the impact that one person can have, and how sharing your story can inspire others. Students left feeling motivated, thoughtful, and ready to consider how they might make a positive change in their own communities.
East Sussex College is proud to host events like this, organised by the College’s Student Enrichment team as part of a wide-ranging programme of activities delivered throughout the year.
These experiences are designed to broaden students’ awareness of global issues, build confidence and communication skills, and encourage critical thinking beyond the classroom – helping them connect their studies to the wider world and their future aspirations.
