In 2022, the De La Warr Pavilion Bandstand was torn apart by the high winds of Storm Eunice. ESC Eastbourne students studying Art & Design Level 2, Extended Diploma in Creative Practice, and Foundation Diploma in Art & Design were tasked with a unique project to design concepts for a reimagined bandstand.
The idea was to channel the essence of the original bandstand, and dream big with new bold and modern structures.
Some designs moved beyond the original concept of just a performance space to propose a range of further possibilities and functions such as climbing walls and frames, sound walls & soft sculpture. With repurposing in mind, the original base was used as the starting point for their new design concepts. Students explored their ideas through drawing and model-making, using a range of approaches, materials, techniques, and processes to develop a stimulating breadth of possibilities.
Dylan Carbonell-Ferrer, Art & Design Course Leader at East Sussex College, said, “The DLWP Bandstand project was a great opportunity for students to work on a real-life design project and to show their work in a world class venue.
“It started on a wet and blustery day in November where students had a site visit to measure the existing base structure and culminated, on one of the hottest days of the year, putting up a show of all their designs. The students have worked with professionalism throughout the project and that is demonstrated in the quality of the work on show.”
The exhibition remains available to view until 26 August, make sure you check it out! Click here to find out more information.
