The exhibition runs from 17th-22nd March 2026, giving the local community the chance to see national-level design work created right here in Lewes.
James DiBiase, Art & Design Course Leader, said, “Touched by Gold showcases the ambition, creativity and professionalism of our students. Competing nationally and responding to a work as powerful as Das Rheingold gives them invaluable real-world experience and the confidence to see themselves as future professionals.”
Among the exhibitors is Leah Thorpe, 17, previously of Heathfield Community College, who has designed a striking costume for one of the Rhinemaidens.
Leah said, “Designing for Das Rheingold has been an incredible experience. Creating a costume for a Rhinemaiden meant thinking about movement, texture and character all at once. Seeing it displayed in a professional gallery makes all the hard work feel real. It’s exciting to share it with the public.”
“The exhibition, named to reflect the ambition and creativity of the students, presents bold new work inspired by Wagner’s Das Rheingold,” says Neeta Pedersen, who runs the gallery. “The show features 24 art & design extended diploma students from East Sussex College, Lewes, who are competing in the prestigious Royal Ballet & Opera Design Challenge, the 16th year of a national competition which attracts 2,000 entries from schools and colleges across the UK.
“Students chose one of four specialist pathways – set design, costume design, marketing strategy & design, or wigs, hair and make-up (WHAM) – and developed their work in response to a chosen director’s vision. The process mirrors professional theatre practice, requiring creativity, practical problem-solving, and careful planning. For many, this exhibition is their first experience presenting work publicly in a professional gallery.”
Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite piece, with the winner receiving the Best in Show prize. Students will also steward the exhibition, gaining hands-on experience in presenting and managing a professional show.
