Students witness Public Services in action

Earlier this month, Uniformed Public Services students from East Sussex College Lewes were guests of the City of London Police unit.

Uniformed Public Services students from ESC Lewes had the opportunity to see firsthand the great work of the City of London Police team and they also visited various sites of interest in London relevant to their course.

Upon arrival, students were shown around Lloyd’s of London. Lloyd’s of London are the leading underwriters in the U.K and have underwritten ships/businesses/aircrafts etc for centuries. Students listened to various talks from people who work there including from special constables.

Following that, students toured the Old Bailey and were even able to sit in on one of the cases - a useful exercise in relation to the law unit on their course. They then visited Bishopsgate police station where the students were able to look in depth at the work of the Tactical Firearms unit of the City of London Police.

In what proved to be an invaluable experience for students, they had the opportunity to try on Tactical Firearms gear and were even able to sit in the City of London Police response cars.

Mia Shepherd, a Uniformed Public Services student, said, “Visiting the City of London police was an amazing experience, it gave a great insight on their equipment and how they work day-to-day. It's an amazing opportunity, especially if you’re considering a career in uniformed public service.”

Uniformed Public Services student, Sam Davis, was also thrilled with the opportunity to see how the City of London Police team operate and said, “Visiting the City of London's Armed response team allowed me to have a great insight into what I want to do in my future career.

“The Armed response officers gave us a talk and provided us with loads of information regarding the application and training processes; they also gave us a tour of their vehicles and equipment, and explained their day-to-day and specialist roles within the City of London.”

He added, “The officers also shared their personal experiences within the unit which was very interesting as someone who wants to join the armed Police.”

East Sussex College Lewes students studying Level 3 Uniformed Public Services also had an important visit in February from the Border Force and the Immigration Compliance and Enforcement (ICE) team. The visit provided students studying Uniformed Public Services with an invaluable opportunity to hear and learn from the very best, firsthand. Read more about their visit here.
