Supporting Lives Through an Apprenticeship

Supporting Lives Through an Apprenticeship

Ahtisham Cheema is a Level 3 Health and Social Care apprentice at East Sussex College, working as a domiciliary care assistant with A1 Quality Homecare.

Through his apprenticeship, Ahtisham supports people in their own homes, helping some of the most vulnerable in the community to live with dignity, comfort, and independence.

In his role, Ahtisham provides person-centred care to a wide range of clients, including elderly and frail individuals, people living with dementia, and those receiving end-of-life care. He approaches every visit with empathy and respect, taking the time to understand each person’s needs and build trusting relationships with clients and their families.

One of the most impressive aspects of Ahtisham’s journey is the resilience he has shown. English is his second language, yet he has worked hard to develop his communication skills and succeed in both the practical and academic parts of his course. His determination and positive attitude have helped him overcome challenges and continue to grow in confidence.

Ahtisham’s apprenticeship is part of a wider workforce strategy at A1 Quality Homecare. The organisation offers structured apprenticeship pathways from Level 2 to Level 5, supporting career progression from entry-level roles to senior leadership.

All apprentices benefit from dedicated support from Training Manager Tina Verlander, who provides mentoring, guidance, and wellbeing support. Protected time for study, stable rotas, and a supportive culture ensure apprentices like Ahtisham can balance learning with their work while gaining real-world experience.

His assessor, Maria Wheeler, has seen first-hand the impact Ahtisham has on the people he supports.

“Ahtisham consistently demonstrates empathy, dignity and respect in his care. He builds strong, trusting relationships with clients and provides comfort and reassurance during some of the most difficult times in their lives.”

Through his apprenticeship, Ahtisham has not only developed valuable care skills but is also building a meaningful career.

A1’s approach ensures apprentices gain permanent employment, opportunities for progression, and the confidence to thrive, helping to strengthen the local care sector and deliver high-quality support to the communities of East Sussex.
