Sussex Downs College students impress staff

On April 20th students from Sussex Downs College took part in a DGH taster day – the first of its kind with the college. Hospital staff were impressed with the capability and pleasant manners of SDC students and described the event as a ‘huge success’.

Health & Social Care students had an interactive day experiencing midwifery, the skills of a scrub nurse and learned about pathways towards careers in adult nursing. They learned what life is like on a real hospital ward by handling authentic surgical instruments; learning to scrub down and taking part in a realistic mock birth on the maternity ward.

Maisie Simon-Padmore, one of the students who participated, described the day as ‘an amazing experience, I enjoyed every minute of it. I have learned so much about the different specialities within a hospital setting’.

The day opened students’ eyes, leaving them inspired and excited about potential careers, so much so that the Trust would like to replicate this taster day at Conquest Hospital with students from the Hastings campus.
