Originally from Wisconsin, USA, Sylvi joined East Sussex College through the global exchange programme run by Educatius, a high school exchange organisation. She’s been studying Fashion & Textiles, Fine Art, Photography, and Performing Arts - and now, her next stop is The Gambia.
Sylvi is one of just four people worldwide selected for the Aiducatius Creativity Internship - a charitable initiative run by Educatius to support students at St. Martin’s School in The Gambia. During the internship, Sylvi co-lead creative workshops using storytelling and theatre to inspire young learners.
“I came to the UK because my local high schools just didn’t offer enough for someone serious about the arts,” Sylvi said. “East Sussex College has a Performing Arts Academy with staff who really know the industry. I’ve learned so much - and it’s opened doors like this one.”
Living with a host family in Lewes, Sylvi has embraced British life while gaining confidence and independence.
“They’ve been amazing,” she said. “From daily routines to British culture, they’ve supported me every step of the way.”
Sylvi traces her creative spark back to a Halloween costume. “I told my mom I wanted to make my own. I built bird wings with a fifteen-inch wingspan. It wasn’t the costume that changed me - it was having someone believe in my ideas. That’s what I want to do for other students.”
In The Gambia, Sylvi is working alongside other global participants: Anne Håkanes from Norway, Fednike Nozistene from Florida, and Irish coordinator Margaret Pettersen, with support from Educatius staff.
“This year has changed my life,” Sylvi said. “Going to the UK gave me the education I wanted. Now I’m going to Africa to share what I’ve learned.”
Well done, Sylvi - your creativity and passion are inspiring. We’re proud to have been part of your journey.
