The two-day shoot, which took place on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th June, centred around the students' work on a classic Ford Escort. Filming began on Tuesday afternoon with pre-recorded segments of the students showcasing the mechanical and bodywork elements of the project.
On Wednesday morning, auctioneer David Mathewson arrived on campus to meet the students, hear about their work, and take the car back to Yorkshire for auction and further restoration if the new owner wishes to take the car to the next level.
Most of the proceeds from the car sale will be donated to St Wilfrid’s Hospice, giving the project an even more meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
Students not only had the chance to appear on camera but also gained invaluable insight into the television production process and the classic car industry. The project highlighted the high level of skill and passion within the college’s Motor Vehicle department and offered students a platform to demonstrate their learning to a national audience.
Students Beth Payne and Harrison Rolfe were both interviewed for TV, where they spoke about their experience working on the car.
Beth said, “I’m proud of the process and the team of people who worked on the car, they’ve been great. I’d definitely do this project again!"
Harrison added, “I’d 100% do this again, working on the bodywork and other mechanical work to piece it together is so rewarding. The tutors have been amazing and have given us help and opportunities throughout this project.”
Deputy Head of Curriculum Mark Streeter, said, “This has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their skills on a national platform. Working on a classic car like the Ford Escort and being part of a professional TV production gave them a real insight into both the automotive and media industries. It’s something they’ll remember for a long time – we’re incredibly proud of the way they represented the college.”
David enjoyed a warm Eastbourne welcome, with an overnight stay locally arranged ahead of filming day two. The segment is due to air later this year as part of the new season of Bangers & Cash, broadcast on UKTV’s Yesterday channel.
"It was a real pleasure to meet the fantastic staff and students of East Sussex College,” said David. “There's clearly an energy and passion among everyone I met, which - alongside learning facilities that are second to none - will enable successful graduates to move forward into a rewarding and exciting career in the UK's automotive industry."
The episode will likely be broadcast next year, so stay tuned!
