Join us for an exciting introduction to catering. During this Level 1 course, you will learn preparation, cooking and presentation methods for a variety of dishes. We'll also help you build your confidence so you can produce tasty dishes for our customers.

What will I study?

On this course you will learn preparation, cooking and presentation methods for a variety of dishes for food service. Develop the confidence to work in our professional kitchens and engage with customers.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Minimum two grade 2 at GCSE including English and/or maths.

How will I be assessed?

There are a variety of assessment methods for example assessing of your finished dishes, projects, some question papers, e-Portfolio management and 30 hours of work experience.

What qualification will I achieve?

Level 1 NVQ Food Preparation and Cooking

What can I do after completing this course?

Successful completion of this course will give you the opportunity to progress to other Catering & Hospitality courses or other courses within the college.

Are there any extra costs?

You will need to purchase a set of Chef’s Whites which will include safety shoes, your own knife set and Front of House uniform at a cost of approximately £200.00. (If you require any financial advice or guidance, please contact our Student Services department).

Trips and visits £50.00 together with a materials fee of £75.00. The material fee covers £30.00 for Practical cookery text book, £25.00 for print credit & £20.00 to contribute to ingredients over the year.

Additional Info

This level 1 course gives us the opportunity to practise basic skills a number of times to achieve the skills required in hospitality and catering and move on to a level 2 programme if appropriate. This course provides the time and pace for students who require it.
