What will I study?

This qualification is designed for learners who want to develop specialist skills in bench joinery and progress toward a career in the construction industry. You will study a range of practical and theory-based units that cover essential aspects of the trade. These include health, safety and welfare in construction, principles of building construction, and the use of hand and power tools. You’ll also learn how to produce setting out details for joinery products, mark out from setting out details, and manufacture joinery components such as doors, frames, and staircases. The course combines workshop-based learning with classroom theory, helping you build confidence, precision, and craftsmanship in preparation for employment or further study.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Successful completion of the Level 1 course and GCSE English or maths at grade 3.

How will I be assessed?

By a series of practical tasks in the workshop and on-line and written end of unit tests.

What can I do after completing this course?

Further Study: You can move on to a Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery, which builds on your skills with more advanced techniques and complex joinery projects. This is ideal if you’re aiming for supervisory roles or want to deepen your craftsmanship.

Apprenticeship: Many learners choose to enter a bench joinery or site carpentry apprenticeship, combining paid work with continued learning. This route helps you gain industry experience while working toward a full NVQ qualification.

Employment: You’ll be qualified to work as a junior bench joiner in workshops or manufacturing environments, producing doors, windows, staircases, and bespoke furniture. Employers may include joinery firms, construction companies, or specialist furniture makers.

Self-Employment: With experience, some joiners go on to become self-employed, offering bespoke joinery services or working as subcontractors.

Are there any extra costs?

Full details will be confirmed at an interview. You will need to provide steel toe capped boots and a yellow high-vis vest
