What will I study?

During the course you will gain an insight into the variety of buildings and structures that painters and decorators work on. You will be able to learn some of the fundamental techniques that are used in the industry and practise them in our purpose built workshop. You will learn how to prepare surfaces for decorating, apply paint using a brush or roller, and how to paste and hang paper. English and maths is an important part of this course

During the course you will cover topics including:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction
  • Access equipment and working platforms
  • Preparing surfaces for decoration
  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller
  • Applying foundation and plain papers
  • Producing specialist decorative finishes

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

You will need 2 GCSEs grade E/2 or above including English and maths.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments will take place throughout the duration of the course. Practical tasks will make up 60% of the assessment, coursework will make up 10% and 30% will be made up of exams. Constructive feedback from your tutor will help you to improve and progress towards recognised industrial standards.

What can I do after completing this course?

On completion of the course you can progress onto the Level 2 Painting and Decorating or start an apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating.

With additional training you may wish to start a career in the industry as a Painter and decorator

Are there any extra costs?

A range of specified PPE and a basic painting kit and equipment will be required for this course and will cost approximately £50.

The PPE required will consist of safety boots and white bib and brace overalls. There are also a number of opportunities throughout the year for various construction related trips which may also incur a cost.
