What will I study?

During the course you will build on your existing knowledge and skills to gain a greater understanding of the trade. You will use your knowledge of basic joint making and be able to apply it to more advance carpentry maintenance. Learn will take place in our purpose built carpentry workshop where you will practise performing first fix carpentry such as installing floor joists, and practise putting together timber frames for partition walls. You will also be introduced to more advanced power tools. You will be able to develop your English and maths skills and develop your employability skills during work experience placements.

During the course you will cover topics such as:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • Carry out second fix operations
  • Carry out carpentry maintenance

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

2 GCSEs grade D/3 in English and maths, and successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Site Carpentry.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments will take place throughout the duration of the course. Practical tasks will make up 60% of the assessment, coursework will make up 30% and 10% will be made up of exams. Accuracy and completing tasks within a specified time frame will be important to the successful completion of the course. Constructive feedback from your tutor will also help you to improve and progress towards recognised industrial standards.

What can I do after completing this course?

On completion of the course you can progress onto a Level 3 Site Carpentry course or start an apprenticeship in Carpentry.

You may wish to start your career as a Carpenter, become Self-employed, become a Site manager, or become a Property developer.

Are there any extra costs?

A range of specified PPE will be required for this course and will cost approximately £50.

The PPE required will consist of safety boots. There are also a number of opportunities throughout the year for various construction related trips which may also incur a cost.
